33rd Annual Duncan & Miller National Convention
The National Duncan Glass Society's 33rd Annual Convention Dinner Meeting was held on Friday,
July 25, at the George Washington Hotel's Grand Ballroom. Tables were decorated with crystal candy
jar centerpieces beautifully cut with Duncan & Miller's Garland pattern by Clyde King and filled
with lovely summer flowers. The centerpieces, compliments of Clyde King and Bernard and Rosalyn Lalli,
were also prizes awarded to one lucky person at each table.
The evening began with a reception to welcome guest speaker Dean Six. Reception guests enjoyed passed
hors d'oeuvres along with complimentary punch courtesy of the Lalli family and wine from the Cooper family.
Jason Lalli entertained the gathering with pieces on the baby grand piano. Tony Tomazin delivered the invocation
and dinner followed - a combination of a delicious menu and interesting conversation.Following dinner, President Susan Allen called the annual meeting to order. Susan spoke of the club's accomplishments during the past year and the challenges ahead; then she presented a tribute to Al Davidson who recently resigned from the Board of Directors after many years of service. Al was thanked with a enthusiastic round of applause. The business meeting continued with reports from the President, Secretary, Treasurer and Committee Chairmen. Nominations for three available positions on the Board of Directors were read and the slate of candidates was unanimously approved. Congratulations to Susan Allen, Sherry Cooper, and Ray Day. The business meeting was adjourned.
Dean Six, co-founder and the Executive Director of the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia, was
introduced as the special guest speaker. He engaged the audience as he presented "A Broad Survey of
Mid-Century Modern American Glass" with his easy, interactive style and interesting assortment of glass,
including many pieces of Duncan & Miller as examples of the era.2008 Glass Show & Sale
The Glass Show & Sale moved to a new location this year - the Washington County Fairgrounds and Expo Center. Board members and volunteers began the set up on Thursday, July 24, while Exhibitors arrived on Friday, July 25. The annual exhibitor luncheon was provided courtesy of Tom Bloom and Jean Allen. Shirley O'Brien assisted with the preparation and service. Susan Allen organized the Glass Display - The Colors of Duncan - and it was a focal point of interest during the weekend. A group of volunteers greeted visitors from 14 states and collected the door prize tickets. Marcy Munnell managed the Chinese Auction which was filled with a remarkable array of items. Beverly Backner organized and staffed the kitchen which provided delicious choices for hungry shoppers throughout the weekend. Rosalyn Lalli, Dana Doctorick, and Meg Lalli handled sales and membership renewals at the Club booth while Pat and Shirley O'Brien manned the Club Glass Sale.
Consignment Auction
Jack Moore supervised the Consignment Auction and with the help of Club volunteers, auctioneers Hezzie Reese, Bill McGowan and the friendly staff at Three Rivers Auction Co. provided buyers with an exciting evening of bidding.
